She sat there, staring at the man that sat across her. His face was stained from the tears he had been crying, his eyes all red.
She loved him with all her heart and he loved her too, with all his soul, his being, but not in the same way as she did. He couldn’t love her the way she did. He couldn’t give her the love she needed, she deserved. She meant the world to him, and this was breaking his heart even more, but this was not the reasons for his tears.
She got up from her seat, and sat next to him and he instinctively held on to her began sobbing.
He had just come out to his family, and like all coming out it had its consequences, something in a way he was expecting but when it happened it broke him even more. He will felt abandoned and all alone. And yet he found solace in her arms, cause the one he loved couldn’t handle the coming out and left him to face it by himself.
She held him tightly, though she felt the hurt and pain of rejection, she knew her pain was dwarfed the pain and rejection he was going through, and she couldn’t let him go through it by himself.
She held him rightly, and softly hummed…
“If you're lost, you can look, and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall, I will catch you, I'll be waiting
Time after time
If you're lost, you can look, and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall, I will catch you, I'll be waiting (I will be waiting)
Time after time”
A few years later she finally met the man of her dreams. After an extended courtship she finally gave in and said yes. Life was beautiful, even with its ups and downs. It was definitely not smooth sailing, but they made it through choppy seas.
Then one day, on returning home, she found him all distraught and scared. Once again she was seeing a man who appeared beaten and down on himself, whose eyes were red and face stained from the tears he had cried.
He told that her that he had got laid off in the office restructuring, a victim of the politics that he refused to play. This was even more tough since they were talking of finally starting a family of their own by first getting their very own place.
She sat opposite him and held his hand without saying a word. Instinctively he collapsed in her arms and began sobbing. She just held on to him without saying a word letting him sob, allowing him to let it all out.
When he finally settled she wiped away his tears and kissed him on his forehead and then his cheek, assuring him that all will be alright. Telling him that he could finally pursue the things he always wanted to do. She knew it would be difficult and would be a risky proposition, but he didn’t have to do it all by himself, she was there with him. And they could always postpone starting a family by a few years.
She hummed as she held him tight,
“If you're lost, you can look, and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall, I will catch you, I'll be waiting
Time after time
If you're lost, you can look, and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall, I will catch you, I'll be waiting (I will be waiting)
Time after time”
After a couple of tough years they were able to ride out the storm. They were finally able to start a family of their own.
When it finally came the time for their little one to leave the nest and plot his own course, she once again found a boy who scared as he was excited. Who was looking forward to discover the world out there but at the same time sacred about being on his own. He feared of going into the unknown.
As much as she never ever wanted to let him go and hold on to him a little longer, as long as she could, she knew it was for his best for her to let him go, to let him spread his wings and soar.
She knew there would be times he may stumble and fall, but in this fall she knew he would learn. he would pick himself up, dust himself off, and carry-on, wiser than before.
And he would ever be lost, her love would help him find his way back home.
She slowly began to humming as she waved goodbye -
“If you're lost, you can look, and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall, I will catch you, I'll be waiting
Time after time
If you're lost, you can look, and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall, I will catch you, I'll be waiting (I will be waiting)
Time after time”
Years later, she found herself all on her own. The love of her life had long since gone, and her children had left the nest to build nests of their own, to make a life of their own, leaving her all by herself.
She could feel the loneliness and longed for companionship. But she also knew that years of experience had made her strong and independent and confident to be by herself.
So she knew that despite her loneliness, she would make it through.
She stood in front of the mirror staring at her reflection knowing that she would never be alone as long as she had herself.
Once again she slowly began humming to herself -
“If you're lost, you can look, and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall, I will catch you, I'll be waiting
Time after time
If you're lost, you can look, and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall, I will catch you, I'll be waiting (I will be waiting)
Time after time”
